Sell what I have? Are you kidding?
I am a marketer by trade but as a consumer of marketing messages I do not respond well to emotional appeal. If you want to get my attention then do what my friend Daniel Clark did at Children’s HopeChest did just today.
1) Model the way. Don’t just tell me what a Christian aught to do, show me.
2) Back it up with scripture. Let me test my heart and my actions against God’s word.
3) Give me an opportunity to align my actions with my professed beliefs.
4) Help me get going.
Daniel’s What I Have blog post not only inspired me to give but also emboldened me to ask you to sell what you have and give to the poor. Not necessarily everything. Give whatever God puts on your heart.
But for the first time in your life take this scripture seriously and literally. Find something that is valuable to you, sell it and give the proceeds to the poor. Do it with your spouse or do it with your children and teach them about God’s heart. But do it. I’m going to give to Children’s HopeChest but you give to whomever God puts on your heart.
And encourage someone else to go and do the same. I respond to a Christian brother exposing the scriptures and giving me an opportunity to let my actions reflect my professed beliefs. Here are some materials that might be useful:
